Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about creating memorials, ordering plaques, and managing your account.

Getting Started

What is MyEpitaph?

MyEpitaph is a service that lets you create beautiful online memorial pages for loved ones who have passed away. Each memorial can include a biography, photos, videos, a timeline of their life, and shared memories from family and friends. You can also order a brass QR code plaque to place on the gravestone, so anyone who visits can scan and instantly connect with the full story of that person's life.

Is it free to create a memorial?

Yes. Creating a memorial page is completely free. You can add a biography, photos, videos, a life timeline, and family members at no cost. The Free plan allows up to 2 memorials. If you need more, the Pro plan offers unlimited memorials for a small monthly subscription.

Do I need an account?

Yes — you'll need to create a free account to build and manage your memorials. This ensures only you can edit your memorial pages. Visitors don't need an account to view a memorial or share a memory.

Can I see an example before I start?

Absolutely. We have a full example memorial page you can explore to see exactly what a finished memorial looks like, including photos, timeline, family tree, and shared memories. View the example memorial.

Creating a Memorial

What can I include on a memorial page?

Each memorial page can include: a portrait photo and cover image, an epitaph (a short quote or tribute), a full biography, a photo gallery with captions, video links (YouTube or Vimeo), a timeline of key life events, family members (with links between memorials), and a section where visitors can share their own memories.

Can I edit a memorial after publishing it?

Yes. You can edit any aspect of a memorial at any time — add new photos, update the biography, manage the timeline, or moderate shared memories. If you've ordered a QR plaque, the link never changes, so the plaque will always point to the latest version of the memorial.

Can I control who sees the memorial?

Yes. Each memorial has visibility settings. You can make it public (visible to anyone), link-only (only people with the direct link can view it), or password-protected (visitors must enter a password you set). You can change these settings at any time.

Can visitors leave messages or memories?

Yes. Visitors can share their own memories of the person — a favourite story, a kind word, or a personal tribute. All submitted memories go through a moderation step: you review and approve each one before it appears publicly on the memorial page. This ensures you always have the final say on what's displayed.

What is the "Light a Candle" feature?

Light a Candle is a simple, thoughtful gesture that visitors can make on any memorial page. It's a way of showing they remember and care. Each candle is counted, so the family can see how many people have visited and paid their respects.

QR Code Plaques

How does the QR plaque work?

Each brass plaque is engraved with a unique QR code that links directly to your loved one's online memorial. A visitor at the graveside simply scans the code with their phone camera — no app needed — and they're taken straight to the memorial page with photos, stories, and memories.

Will the plaque withstand outdoor weather?

Absolutely. Our plaques are crafted from solid brass with a protective coating that resists rain, frost, UV exposure, and temperature extremes. Brass is naturally corrosion-resistant and will develop a beautiful patina over time, or you can polish it to maintain its original shine.

How does the plaque attach to the headstone?

All plaques come with industrial-grade outdoor adhesive backing that bonds to stone, granite, marble, and metal. The Classic and Heritage use adhesive only. The Memorial plaque also includes a screw-mount option for a more permanent installation — we supply stainless steel screws and stone plugs.

Do I need to create the memorial before ordering a plaque?

Yes — the QR code is linked to a specific memorial page, so you'll need to create one first (it's free). You can continue editing the memorial after ordering the plaque. The QR code link never changes, so the plaque will always point to the right page.

How long does delivery take?

Each plaque is engraved to order. We aim to dispatch within 5 working days. UK delivery is typically 2–3 days after dispatch. International shipping is available and usually takes 5–10 working days.

What if the QR code gets damaged or stops working?

QR codes have built-in error correction, so they'll continue to scan even with minor scratches or wear. If a plaque is significantly damaged, we offer replacement plaques at a reduced price — the new plaque will link to the same memorial.

Can I order a plaque as a gift?

Yes. You can ship to a different address at checkout. Add our gift wrapping option for a linen-lined box with a handwritten message card — a thoughtful, meaningful gift for someone who has lost a loved one.

Account & Billing

What's the difference between Free and Pro?

The Free plan lets you create up to 2 memorial pages with all features included. The Pro plan removes this limit, giving you unlimited memorials — ideal for families who want to preserve multiple stories. You can upgrade at any time from your profile page.

How do I upgrade to Pro?

Go to your profile page and click "Upgrade to Pro". You'll be taken to a secure Stripe checkout to set up your subscription. The upgrade takes effect immediately.

Can I cancel my Pro subscription?

Yes, at any time. Go to your profile page and click "Manage Subscription" to access the Stripe billing portal. If you cancel, your memorials remain accessible — you just won't be able to create new ones beyond the free limit.

What happens to my memorials if I delete my account?

Deleting your account permanently removes all your memorials, uploaded photos and videos, and any associated data. This cannot be undone. If you have a QR plaque installed, it will no longer link to a memorial page.

Privacy & Security

Who can see my memorial pages?

That's entirely up to you. Each memorial can be set to public, link-only, or password-protected. You control the visibility and can change it at any time.

Is my data safe?

Yes. We use industry-standard encryption for all data in transit and at rest. Passwords are hashed using Argon2, and we never store or share your data with third parties. We use Plausible for privacy-friendly analytics — no cookies, no tracking across sites.

Can I delete a memorial?

Yes. You can delete any memorial from the edit page or your profile. This permanently removes the memorial, all uploaded media, and any shared memories. The deletion is immediate and cannot be undone.
